Nebraska City, Neb., April 12, 1999--Eloise McClendon, Attalla, Alabama, will receive one of two 1999 Good Steward Awards from The National Arbor Day Foundation at a special awards ceremony to be held here on Saturday, May 1. The award honors those who show extraordinary effort in tree planting or conservation work on private property.

McClendon is being recognized for her life-long commitment to tree planting and conservation. She and her late husband began their 1,800-acre tree farm in 1933, and Eloise has helped plant more than 800,000 trees there. She also promotes environmental stewardship through presentations, demonstrations, scholarships to students, and a museum she built to showcase artifacts from her region.

McClendon will attend the 27th annual National Arbor Day Foundation Awards banquet to receive the award. The awards ceremony is part of the Arbor Day weekend celebration held in Nebraska City from April 30-May 2.

Others being honored this year include the Forest Discovery Center, Starlight, Indiana, winner of the second 1999 Good Steward Award for educating the public about responsible forest management; the Missouri Conservation Department's "Missouri Arbor Week Activity Guide," winner of a 1999 Celebration Award; Joseph Stonis, Cape Coral, Florida, winner of a 1999 Enersen Award for his leadership in tree planting and preservation; and Anderson Middle School, Bellevue, Nebraska, winner of a 1999 Education Award for its hands-on teaching of the environmental importance of trees.

The National Arbor Day Foundation is a nonprofit education organization dedicated to tree planting and environmental stewardship.
