The Arbor Day Foundation and International Paper to Continue Partnership to Reforest Communities
Mary Kay Inc. and the Arbor Day Foundation Partner Together to Celebrate America's Oldest Environmental Holiday
On April 26, Americans young and old will celebrate America's oldest environmental holiday: Arbor Day.
Lincoln, Neb. (April 4, 2019) – On April 26, Americans young and old will celebrate America's oldest environmental holiday: Arbor Day. Arbor Day was established in 1872 in the Great Plains, an area of the country not often associated with trees. But Arbor Day isn't about the past -- it's about the future. Mary Kay, a corporate leader in sustainability, has committed to planting one tree for every social post featuring "#ArborDay" -- up to 25,000 trees. And the Arbor Day Foundation has launched celebratearborday.com to encourage people across the country to find and participate in local celebrations.
"Arbor Day is the one day a year to celebrate trees and all that they do for us," said Dan Lambe, president, Arbor Day Foundation. "And with all the challenges facing the future of our planet, the simple act of planting trees has never been more important. When you plant a tree, you single-handedly help improve the quality of life in your community."
The holiday comes on heels of the Arbor Day Foundation launching its Time for Trees initiative. The goals of this initiative are to plant 100 million trees in forests and communities around the globe and inspire 5 million tree planters by 2022 -- with support from members, donors and partners. With an extensive list of events happening throughout the U.S., celebratearborday.com helps people identify opportunities for them to get involved and celebrate trees in their community this Arbor Day.
Mary Kay's commitment to planting up to 25,000 trees will improve quality of life in communities across the country and the world. Trees from the social hashtag will be planted in forests of high need within the United States, Peru and Ireland. Visitors to celebratearborday.com can watch the number of trees planted increase on the website's tree counter. This commitment is in addition to Mary Kay's pledge to plant trees through its Pink Doing Green campaign.
"Mary Kay has always believed that it is our responsibility and pledge to our customers, employees and independent beauty consultants to be good stewards of the environment," said Deb Gibbins, chief operating officer at Mary Kay. "Arbor Day is the perfect time to get engaged and take action that will lead to a healthier planet. We're proud to partner with the Arbor Day Foundation to leave a positive legacy of sustainability."
In October 2018, Mary Kay announced it had planted its one millionth tree in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation. The additional trees planted through use of "#ArborDay" are just the start of the next million Mary Kay hopes to plant around the country and the world.
April also marks the Arbor Day Foundation's annual award program, honoring individuals and organizations for their outstanding contribution to tree planting, conservation and stewardship. The 2019 Arbor Day Award winners will be announced on April 18. Winners will be presented with their award in the weeks following Arbor Day.
