Arbor Day Foundation, Humana Team Up To Plant Trees In Forests Throughout the United States
Nebraska City, Neb. (February 26, 2009) – The Arbor Day Foundation is announcing today a new partnership with Humana Inc., one of the nation's leading health-benefits companies, to plant trees in forests throughout the United States.
For every customer who switches to e-mail communications, Humana has teamed up with the Arbor Day Foundation to donate $1 towards the planting of trees. Forests from every part of the country are in need of replanting because of recent wildfires, or damage from insects or disease.
Humana's customers can make the switch via the MyHumana portal at www.humana.com, clicking on the "My Profile" link, and selecting "My Communication Preferences." E-mail communications allow people to receive health-benefits information along with health and wellness tips.
"We appreciate the support from Humana and its many caring customers to help restore our nation's forests through this tree-planting program," said John Rosenow, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Trees help protect waterways and soil, restore habitat for wildlife, and help preserve the Earth's vital forests for generations to come. Humana should be commended for its commitment to the environment."
America's forests are in need of replanting. Due to recent years of record or near record forest fires, the U.S. Forest Service has more than a 1 million acre backlog of national forest land that needs replanting.
"By switching to electronic communication, Humana members make changes that lead to greater sustainability for our planet," said Charles Lambert, Humana's vice president, Associate & Business Services. "As a company, we've made significant strides toward environmental sustainability by developing enterprise-wide programs such as our ENERGY STAR partnership and associate-led Green Teams, inspiring Humana associates to improve energy efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of our business operations. We continue to explore opportunities to lessen our environmental impact, all the while maximizing shareholder value and exceeding the expectations of our members."
