LINCOLN, Nebraska (February 20, 2024) – The Arbor Day Foundation is helping to reestablish tree canopy impacted by the pine beetle, one of the most destructive forest pests in the Southeastern United States. As part of this initiative, the tree planting nonprofit will distribute 1,000 free trees to people in several Georgia communities southwest of Atlanta including Newnan, Grantville, LaGrange, Hogansville, Franklin, and Greenville.
“Pest infestations can be devastating to communities, wiping out entire tree canopies. When we replant, we’re not just replacing what’s been lost. We’re creating stronger, more diverse urban forests that can stand up to the challenges of the future,” said Kristen Bousquet, senior manager, corporate partnerships at the Arbor Day Foundation. “This project will help ensure this community can continue to enjoy the many benefits of trees for years to come.”
Residents can reserve up to two free trees through the Arbor Day Foundation’s Community Tree Distribution technology. The platform features a mapping tool to help homeowners identify the ideal planting locations to maximize air, water, energy, and carbon benefits for their home. They can also use the tool to get updates about their order and access tree species information.
People can click here to choose from a range of tree species and if they’d prefer to have trees shipped or pick them up during a local distribution event.
