Catskill Mountains

Replanting Our Nation’s Forests

Forest Overview

Known by most as the Catskills, this New York mountain range is a unique mix of rugged terrain and eclectic towns that attracts visitors throughout the seasons. It is also the home of the legendary Rip Van Winkle. This area is known for beautiful views, peaceful forests, and plenty of adventure - everything from downhill skiing to fly fishing.

Catskill Mountains Needs Our Help

The waterways within this range serve as habitat for brook trout, and the population is struggling. In order to secure and improve the resiliency in the brook trout populations, nine riparian restoration projects are planned within the Catskill Mountains. These tree plantings will stabilize streambanks and filter overland flows, improving trout habitat and water quality. They will also shade the creek and contribute organic material and insects to the waterway while providing important habitat for other wildlife.

You can help repair damage to wildlife habitats. Read about our efforts in each and restore the awe-inspiring beauty of our state and national forests.
