Greater Yellowstone Whitebark Pine Committee—Ennis, Montana

Whitebark pine trees are critical to the ecosystem of the Greater Yellowstone Area, but the species faces several threats, including white pine blister rust, increasing pine beetle outbursts and competition from other forest species. As a result, the whitebark pine was added to the 2011 federal Endangered Species List, prompting the Greater Yellowstone Whitebark Pine Committee into action. The Committee has already put together a comprehensive Whitebark Pine Distribution map to better monitor the status of the species, brought together several agencies into alignment and is in the process of collecting 200,000 whitebark pine seedlings in high-priority areas to ensure future cone preservation.
