Virginia Fifth-Grader Wins Arbor Day National Poster Contest

Nebraska City, Neb., April 16, 1999--Katlyn Cagle, a fifth grade student at Enterprize Elementary in Woodbridge, Virginia, has been named the grand prize winner in the 1999 Arbor Day National Poster Contest. The contest is co-sponsored by Keebler Company and The National Arbor Day Foundation.

Katlyn's poster was selected for its interpretation of the contest theme "Trees are Terrific . . for Shelter and Shade." Fifth-grade students from 42 states and the District of Columbia took part in the 1999 contest, with state winners advancing to the national competition. In all, more than 39,000 curriculum kits were distributed to schools across the country.

Katlyn, along with her mother, Susan Cagle, and her teacher, Karin Kennett, will join the Foundation for the April 30-May 2 Arbor Day Weekend celebration at Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska City, Neb. Katlyn will receive a $1,000 savings bond, a framed color-copy of her poster, and a lifetime membership in The National Arbor Day Foundation. Ms. Kennett will receive $200 for classroom materials.

First held in 1992, the Arbor Day National Poster Contest is open to fifth-grade students in states with a designated state contest coordinator. The contest is designed to help promote the importance of Arbor Day and tree planting.
