Arbor Day Farm Offers Exciting Ways to Celebrate Arbor Day

Nebraska City, Neb. (April 23, 2007) -- There's no better place to celebrate the 135th anniversary of Arbor Day than Nebraska City and Arbor Day Farm, the birthplace of the nation's oldest environmental holiday.

"Trees give us back so much for decades and decades and yet demand very little in return," said John Rosenow, President of The National Arbor Day Foundation. "We can't think of a better place than the site of the very first Arbor Day to celebrate the importance of planting trees."

Plenty of events and fun activities throughout the city are available for people of all ages starting on Arbor Day, April 27, and going through Sunday, April 29. Arbor Day Farm, which includes Lied Lodge & Conference Center, was part of the estate owned by J. Sterling Morton, a visionary environmentalist and the founder of Arbor Day.

The Arbor Day Children's Festival will take place Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Arbor Day Farm Tree Adventure attraction. Special Arbor Day Children's Festival activities will keep kids and adults alike busy throughout the day. People can climb trees, take part in cross-cut saw competitions with the expert Arborist Team, and participate in games and crafts sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation and the Youth Groundwater Foundation. There will also be expert tree planting advice, demonstrations and bare root seedlings sales; live music; and live birds and reptiles from Pioneer Park Nature Center.

"This promises to be a fun-packed weekend celebrated by people of all ages," said Doug Farrar, Vice President of Arbor Day Farm. "There's something for everyone -- for those who want to enjoy all the activities available and for those who choose to come to Arbor Day Farm to relax and enjoy nature by talking a walk on one of our trails. Arbor Day tends to bring out the kid in all of us."

There will also be several events in Nebraska City to celebrate Arbor Day, including the city-wide parade on Saturday from 1-2:30 p.m.; an all-city BBQ at Wildwood Park on Saturday from 6-8 p.m.; and a concert from the Southeast Nebraska Band at the Historic Barns on Arbor Day Farm Sunday starting at 2 p.m. In addition, The National Arbor Day Foundation is helping the Nebraska State Arboretum kick off its "ReTree Nebraska" campaign with a tree-planting ceremony at Wildwood Park on Friday at 4 p.m.
