John Rosenow is the founder and President of The Arbor Day Foundation, which has nearly a million members. Under his leadership, the Foundation created the Tree City USA community forestry program, the Tree Line USA recognition program for utilities, the Building With Trees program for builders and developers, and the Conservation Trees and Trees For America public-education projects. The Foundation sponsors the National Arbor Day Awards program, and its Arbor Day National Poster Contest involves more than 75,000 5th grade classrooms nationwide. Its Rain Forest Rescue program helps save threatened tropical forests. The Arbor Day Foundation’s public service advertising is endorsed by the Advertising Council and aired by the networks, and TV and radio stations throughout America. John is the publisher of the Tree City USA Bulletin series, The National Arbor Day Foundation's Library of Trees, and the Foundation's bimonthly publication, Arbor Day.

In Nebraska City the Foundation manages Arbor Day Farm, a National Historic Landmark, the estate of Arbor Day founder J. Sterling Morton, as an educational visitor attraction; John oversaw the construction of Lied Lodge & Conference Center, which is dedicated to meetings focusing on trees and conservation. Today the property is home to the Arbor Day Farm Tree Adventure, featuring the Lied Greenhouse, Woodland Pavilion, Tree House Trail; its Nature’s Classroom, Exploratory Trail, and the planned Exploratory building are being developed in collaboration with the Dimensions Educational Research Foundation.

The Tree City USA program, which is cosponsored by the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service, has grown to include 3,080 towns, cities, and military bases in all 50 states.

John organized The Arbor Day Foundation in 1972, the 100th anniversary of Arbor Day.
