The Nut Tree Arboretum at Arbor Day Farm

Nut trees offer the countless benefits of all trees, while providing a crop alternative for land that is often unsuitable for other crops or for more traditional cultivation.

Trees and tree plantations offer many benefits-from soil and water conservation to oxygen production, and from wildlife habitat to landscape beautification. With the Nut Tree Arboretum, all of these advantages are combined with the practical, economic value of nut crop production.

In partnership with the Nebraska Nut Growers, the Nut Tree Arboretum at Arbor Day Farm is a rich research site for several varieties of black walnuts, as well as other nut species including hickory, hazelnut, and pecan. Some of this research complements that being done at Arbor Day Farm's Hazelnut Field, and in all of this work, one thing is obvious: nut trees offer important nutritional and economic value to growers.

Principles you can use…

Farmers and landowners looking for income diversification, often on otherwise inaccessible or untillable land, are increasingly turning to nut production. As with all trees, nut trees must be selected based on soil and climate needs, but thanks to the many varieties now available, suitable trees can generally be found for your location.
