Hazard Trees Workshop

How to Identify, Evaluate, and Manage

Featuring Dr. Bruce Fraedrich

Careful management of tree defects creates a safer environment, reduces liability, and provides a basis for prioritizing tree care. It can also extend an idividual tree's viablity as a valuable component in an urban landscape. As our knowledge base increases and urban forestry becomes more sophisticated, a higher level of duty to protect people and property from defective trees is expected. Tree professionals at all levels, who are trained to recognize and prevent hazard trees are the best defense against problems and costly damages resulting in future tree failure.

What you will learn

  • Visual tree analysis— recognize symptoms of defects in branches, stems, and roots
  • How to assess risk associated with defective trees
  • Tree defense systems— how trees defend themselves and how cultural practices such as pruning impact your effectivness
  • How the risk evaluation method you use can impact your effectiveness
  • Wood and root decay analysis techniques— learn about the latest tools for assessing tree defects
  • How to develop proactive programs and policies that mitigate risk associated with tree failures
  • Get you questions answered about local and regional tree care issues or concerns

Tree Planting & Establishment Workshop

Men planting a tree.

Featuring Dr. Bruce Fraedrich

Planting trees is an investment in the future, but trees that are planted incorrectly or are not given adequate care to grow and thrive will not yield the dividends we expect. Whether you are leading a community tree planting initiative, overseeing the planting of trees in a new development, or planting a single tree in your own yard, implementing proper tree planting and aftercare practices will safeguard your investment.

This workshop, taught by Dr. Bruce Fraedrich, provides useful, up-to-date, scientific information on planting and caring for young trees. An indoor lecture focuses on a variety of factors that impact the ability of trees to become established and thrive: tree species and cultivars, soils and the planting site, planting techniques, and types of planting stock. Plating techniques, troubleshooting, and after care will also be addressed in outdoor demonstrations.

What you will learn

  • Proper and suggested tree species and cultivars for your region
  • How to correctly evaluate soils and site conditions
  • The latest tree planting techniques and standards
  • Pros and cons of planting bare root, balled, and burlapped, and containerized trees
  • How to overcome transplating problems— troubleshooting
  • Correct after care techniques— pruning, irrigation, soil and pest management

Workshop Agenda

  • Regionally Appropriate Tree Species and Cultivars
  • Evaluating Site and Soils
  • Planting Techniques/Standards— A Preview of ANSI Specs
