University of Washington's
Arbor Day Fair
Seattle, Washington

The University of Washington's Arbor Day Fair, Seattle, Washington, winner of one of three Celebration Awards for programs that best represent the spirit of the tree planters' holiday. The event attracted 5,500 area school children last year, giving them a hands-on educational experience designed to increase their awareness and knowledge of trees, wildlife, and the forest ecosystem. The fair is sponsored by the University of Washington's College of Forest Resources Alumni Association.

The 1999 Minneapolis Parks Arbor Day Celebration, winner of a Celebration Award. More than 170 trees were planted on Arbor Day 1999 in the Lake Nokomis area of Minneapolis, to help replace trees lost during a series of storms that struck the city. Other ceremonial tree plantings were a part of the event, as hundreds of volunteers worked to restore the area.

Spencer, South Dakota's Regreening Project, recognized with this year's third Celebration Award. On Arbor Day 1999, thousands of volunteers helped replant the entire community forest of Spencer, after the destruction the town suffered from a tornado the year before. In all, more than 300 landscape trees and 100 conservation tree seedlings were planted that day, with the support of thousands of volunteers and of local, state, and federal agencies.


Leaders in tree planting and environmental stewardship from around the country and world will be honored by The Arbor Day Foundation at its 28th annual Arbor Day Awards celebration to be held in Nebraska City, Nebraska on Saturday, April 29, 2000. The awards ceremony is part of the Arbor Day weekend celebration held in Nebraska City from April 28-30. Award winners are recognized for their leadership in the cause of tree planting, conservation, and environmental stewardship.
