Celebration Award

Eisenhower Elementary School, Camp Hill, PA

In 2007, parent volunteer Christel Ertel-Stewart, delivered her first Arbor Day presentation to the third through fifth grade students at Eisenhower Elementary in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. What started as a modest “Tree Talk” quickly evolved into an annual comprehensive curriculum where students learned the important benefits that trees provide individuals, the community, and the world. Basic tree identification skills are introduced and art education is integrated into the curriculum. The art education component of the celebration flourished and in 2012, the Eisenhower Elementary Arbor Day Poster Contest began. Now students in third and fourth grade participate in the lesson plans – learning about trees with the culmination of their experience occurring in fifth grade when they create posters to showcase what they have absorbed over the years.
