Lawn to Woodland

An Innovative Program for Maryland Landowners.

Converting turf to trees in rural and suburban areas can make an enormous difference in the quality of the land, the water resources, and the lives of people in Maryland.

Open lawns make poor habitat for most wildlife species. By contrast, woodlands constitute vital habitat for the wide range of mammals and songbirds.

The Maryland Forest Service is offering to plant trees on your property’s lawn free of charge. If you have more than one acre of turf on your Maryland property.

Trees give us cleaner water, cleaner air, cooler temperatures, wildlife diversity, and natural beauty. The Lawn to Woodland program improves environmental benefits and increases home values as unused areas of lawn are converted to natural woodland.

You’ll receive expert advice, free trees, free planting, and monitoring assistance for your new woodland. All of this is at no cost to you.

Through the Lawn to Woodland stewardship program, we can provide citizens like you with tools to plant, protect and maintain healthy tree canopy and help create a smarter, greener, more sustainable Maryland for generations to come.
