Ten Guiding Principles

Make your outdoor learning space more effective.

One of the ten principles is to include a mix of activity areas. This section of the Learning With Nature Idea Book shows you how to create many spaces, such as “Music and Movement,” “Climbing and Crawling,” and “Gathering.” You'll also learn about the other nine principles throughout the Learning With Nature Idea Book’s fully-illustrated sections.

Principle #2 describes the benefits of having a mix of activity areas, such as:

Performance Area

A music & movement area can include scarves to inspire children to move in interesting ways, perhaps mimicking the motion of trees or wind.

Hard, Flat Surface

A flat surface covered with a hard material, like this “tree cookie” flooring, provides an ideal area for children to build with blocks.

Designing Pathways

The Learning With Nature Idea Book shares many clever ideas, such as involving children in designing pathways or garden plots.
