Nature Explore Classroom at Outback Adventures Preschool in Lincoln, NE

In the Outback Adventures Preschool in Lincoln, Nebraska, the owner and lead teacher has put her creed into action for the children. “We believe that children must explore, experiment, make discoveries, and have adventures to learn and grow,” she wrote.

After deciding to instill her own love of nature into a more fulfilling space for the schoolchildren, the school’s owner chose the Nature Explore model, knowing that a daily connection to nature helps children learn and grow better.

The Outdoor Classroom was designed to help children appreciate the characteristics of three well-established trees and a 2-year–old orchard area. Children learn the value of natural items from the native grasses and wooden benches made from local timber.

At the Base Camp children gather to listen to their teacher before exploring the Nature Art Area or playing in the Action Area. Throughout the Classroom, the needs of both children and school teachers receive equal consideration. The Tunnel is constructed of grape vines, making the children feel as if they’re hiding while still allowing their teacher to see them. Children enjoy caring for the perennials in the flower beds or watching tomatoes ripen in The Garden.

Because the beds also contain annuals, new students experience the satisfaction of planting and seeing flowers blossom and grow through the summer season. Occasional rock borders and planted ground covers help separate the Classroom’s multiple sections.

So, whether young students are hiding behind cornstalks in a corn shock or building with tree cookies and stumps in the Building Area, they’re discovering the joy of wonder. And, even as fascination marks their daily connection with the natural world, they are adding new skills to a growing list of proficiencies and interests.
