The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ruth Staples Child Development Laboratory continues to utilize and enhance all areas of their outdoor classroom.
This year, a large dirt digging area was added, tree cookies and other natural materials were replenished and the existing stages were re-floored. Additional loose parts will be added to the Messy Materials Area. Plans are underway to add a "postage stamp" orchard with dwarf fruit trees.
Staff and student teachers attended training provided by the Nebraska Games and Parks and at Pistoia Green School while others attended a nature based preschool conference in Midland, MI.
Families stayed involved in the classroom with a Mammal Exploration Family Night, held in conjunction with the Nebraska Game and Parks. A Nature Photo contest gave families an opportunity to submit a photo of themselves in nature. These were then viewed at a parent function where families could vote on their favorite. International Mud Day brought many families into the classroom to participate in and enjoy this unique play day.
