The Nature Explore Classroom at Hurlburt Youth Center

Hurlburt Youth Center is celebrating their 2nd year as a certified Nature Explore Classroom.
Throughout the year, Hurlburt Youth Center has continued to incorporate many additions to their classroom. New areas include a Phase II area for preteens. This phase has seen the implementation of a Far East Garden for 9-12 years. The garden is a quiet area for children to do their homework or to just appreciate the garden. Phase II also includes a tree circle (12 trees) with shrubs in between and a patio/garden area that is currently in the development stage.
The original classroom continues to plant trees, shrubs, and flowers and to add additional features. A mural was painted in the garden area and a variety of plants with different textures were added.
Many additions and modifications are in the plans for the future. A new arbor/archway is currently being built for the entrance. An additional messy area will be incorporated into the classroom. Stage seating and a wind garden are also future projects.
News and information from the site is made available through monthly updates included in the Hurlburt Youth Newsletter. The Outdoor Classroom Stage has become a focal point for all events, awards and celebrations. The many Youth Center families and children volunteer with the development of the classroom through special projects, construction and events.
