Sheffield was selected by the Alabama Urban Forestry Association as Alabama’s Tree City of the year for 2024. Dr. David West with the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service will present the City with a proclamation from Governor Kay Ivey. We will plant a tree to grow into our city Christmas tree on city hall grounds. Johnnie Everitt of the Alabama Forestry Commission and Sheffield Beautification and Tree Board will set up a table and give out seedlings that afternoon as part of the program. We are still working on plans for the program.

This year marks the 32nd annual Arbor Day Celebration in Montevallo. As a part of the Montevallo Tree City Experience we will have tables set up outside, under tents if necessary, where you can pick up bare root tree seedlings. The format this year will be the same as last year. The trees will be available from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm or until supplies run out. As in the past these trees will be free.

Century Tree Plaques presented. The Mayor will make Memorial Tree dedications to 3 Special People who made Foley a better place because of the time they spent here.

50th Annual St. Charles Beautification Day

There will be over 300 students 7th through 12th grade out working with the MS and HS staff to spruce up the town and school grounds. There are 15 adult volunteers who have volunteered their own free time planning this event over the past year. The high school botany and biology classes transplanted ~3500 petunias & impatiens in early March, and the botany class has spent class time tending to them since then. The DPW crew, the DDA, and the Village of St. Charles staff and council have spent hours planning with us and preparing sites around town.

Delanco Township recieved a seedling sprouted from an acorn taken from the Salem Oak, a 500 year old white oak tree that shaded the Leni Lanape native Americans during their negotiations with the newly arrived colonists. Sadly, the oak blew down in a storm shortly after a crop of acorns were collected by the NJ Forest Service. The acorns were sprouted, with each municipality in NJ given a tree to plant in a location of promenance. Delanco has chosen the grounds of the M. The annual City of Walla Walla Arbor Day Award will be present to a recipient who has proven to be a champion of trees. This year 2 Arbor Day trees will be planted on school grounds, and tree seedlings will be distributed to the children to take home and plant with their families.

Port Townsend’s autumnal Arbor Day celebration is ’Adopt A Native Tree (or Shrub)’ where we adopt out young native plants to interested residents for as long as supplies last. Our summers are very dry while our winters are rainy and cool. Planting trees and shrubs in our community is best undertaken in autumn. Our plants are grown up from bare root stock provided by our local conservation district sales. Our goal is to increase the prevalence of native species in local gardens to help our resident and migratory birds and pollinators survive the effects of climate change on their food sources.
